Francisco Simões will coordinate European study on youth in rural areas

Francisco Simões, a researcher at the Center for Psychological Research and Social Intervention at Iscte-University Institute of Lisbon (CIS-Iscte), was recently appointed coordinator of a major European study focused on youth in rural areas. The study is organized by the Council of Europe in collaboration with the European Union.

“The goal is to carry out a transnational analysis of policies and services aimed at young people living in rural areas,” says researcher Francisco Simões. The study will also focus on the perspectives of these young people in areas such as education, employment, mobility and social participation.

The study aims to be fairly comprehensive, as it is expected to involve around 20 of the 46 member states of the Council of Europe, helping to inform relevant public policies for young people living in peripheral locations, often far from large urban centers and therefore facing unique challenges.

The coordination of this international study stems from Francisco Simões joining the Pool of European Youth Researchers (PEYR) - a group of experts that contributes to the development of European youth policies - in January 2024.

According to the researcher, this study “will contribute to a detailed overview of the conditions and needs of rural youth in various European countries” and has the potential to decisively influence the creation of more appropriate measures and services to support this segment of the population, promoting their development and social and economic integration.
