The 2024 edition of the ERN took place at the National Museum of Natural History and Science (MUHNAC), Lisbon, on September 27. Researchers from CIS-Iscte engaged with the public in different Science Communication activities, with the support of our Science Communication Manager.

With the activity "Discovering the world of sugar(s)", researchers Marília Prada and David Guedes joined Ispa's researcher Magda Saraiva to present their project LessSugar4Kids, funded by 'la Caixa' Foundation (SR23-00271). From 17:00 to 20:30, the research team asked participants to answer a quiz on their knowledge about sugar, and challenged them to measure their own serving sizes of breakfast cereals. Finally, they would be confronted with the recommended dose of the products, their nutritional information, and the WHO's recommendations on sugar consumption.

Later, and until midnight, the research team of the project Time-to-Engage, funded by FCT and 'la Caixa' Foundation (SR23-00290), took over CIS-Iscte's stand. Their activity, "Digital Technologies without Age: Paths to Digital Inclusion in Health" was facilitated by the PIs Elzbieta Campos and Cristina Camilo, the grantees Christofthe Fernandes and Rita Medeiros, and researcher Elsa Pegado (CIES-Iscte). ERN participants were asked to make a doctor's appointment in a simulated website that tried to mimic the difficulties experienced by older people when dealing with new technology and digital platforms related to health. They would then rate their experience, which the research team took as an opportunity to raise awareness of this issue and provide information about the project.

CIS-Iscte has been actively engaged in Science Communication initiatives such as ERN, in which we have participated since 2016. These efforts reflect the institution's ongoing commitment to bridging the gap between scientific research and society. By fostering direct interaction with the community, CIS-Iscte raises awareness of important social issues by promoting critical thinking and informed decision-making. This sustained involvement in public outreach ensures that scientific knowledge continues to play a pivotal role in addressing global challenges, reinforcing the value of research in creating a more informed and equitable future for all.
