Between 5 p.m. and midnight of September 27, the 2024 edition of the European Researchers' Night (ERN) is dedicated to Science for Global Challenges. Find out more about the activities proposed by our research center:

Discovering the world of sugar(s) (17:00-20:30)

Researchers: Marília Prada, Magda Saraiva (ISPA) and the research team of the LessSugar4Kids project

Sugar cubes seen through a magnifying glass (AI generated)
AI generated with DALL-E 3 technology

Activity description: Sugar is everywhere. This master of disguise can take on many forms and even different names. In this activity, we will learn to identify these hidden sugars and understand their impact on our health. In this story - where there are no heroes or villains - we will explore myths and realities about sugar. We will uncover why we love sweets and how they are linked to our memories, experiences, and emotions. Through our exploration of sugar, we can also learn new things about ourselves and our dietary preferences and choices.

Activity description: Let's discover together how to make digital health technologies accessible to everyone! Many older adults face challenges when using digital technologies. Some of these challenges result from the high complexity of the technologies in question or their inadequacy in relation to sensory and motor changes that arise with advancing age. In the case of digital health technologies, difficulties in learning or using them can result in a decrease in motivation for their adoption or in a reduction of access or quality of care, contributing to increased health inequalities. In this activity, we will explore the most common challenges associated with inadequate design of interfaces or functionalities of digital health technologies, discuss how these challenges impact access to health services and their quality, and create practical solutions to overcome them. Join us in ensuring everyone can enjoy the benefits of digital health!
