CIS-Iscte is marking International Day against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia today by highlighting recent scientific contributions from our center in the area of LGBTQIA+ issues.

Gustavo Aybar Camposano has recently defended his doctoral thesis titled “Pride Against Prejudice: A ‘Social Cure’ for Minority Stress Among Lesbian and Gay Individuals”. This research explored how lesbian and gay individuals manage their sexual identity to cope with stigmatization, examining the effectiveness of individual versus collective coping strategies across different cultural contexts. The findings underscore the positive impact of community engagement on mental health outcomes.

In addition, a scientific article titled “Do Different Sources of Sexuality Education Contribute Differently to Sexual Health and Well-Being Outcomes? Examining Sexuality Education in Spain and Portugal”, co-authored by David L. Rodrigues, Ana Catarina Carvalho, Richard O. de Visser, Diniz Lopes, and Maria-João Alvarez. This study investigates how various sources of sexuality education—formal and informal, traditional and modern—impact sexual health and well-being among individuals in Spain and Portugal. The findings highlight the importance of comprehensive and inclusive sexuality education tailored to sociocultural contexts.

We therefore highlight the role of psychological research in promoting human rights and fighting all forms of discrimination.
