Paula Castro's research in social psychology privileges a societal approach inspired by the Theory of social Representations and looking at social, cultural and community change. It focuses on the psycho-social processes that are mobilized for the reception of innovations, both legal and scientific-technological. She has examined how individuals, communities and institutions receive the new sustainability laws, like those promoting biodiversity protection, conservation and recycling behaviours and public participation. She has also looked at the public perception and reception of new technologies. These studies are conducted with a variety of methods and often rely on methodological triangulation.
Other areas of interest are social memory, local knowledge and relation to place in communities undergoing change processes.
