Did you know that human adults seem to be more efficient decoders of dog's emotional expression that to humans or chimpanzees facial expressions?
This ability starts early, as teenagers perform the same way. Unconscious reactions to emotional expressions, such as those measured by changes in facial muscle electric activity – using a technique known as EMG – point in the same direction – showing for stronger and faster responses to dog´s facial expressions than to humans’ or chimpanzees’ expressions. This, at first unexpected finding, is part of the results of a 3yr project on Empathy funded by FCT and lead by Augusta Gaspar. Other team members are Francisco Esteves, Ana Emauz, Silvia Rocha and Patricia Arriaga. More soon.
